Relieving Discomfort from Braces is one of the most common questions we are asked at Weber Orthodontics. If you are embarking on the journey towards a stunning new smile with braces we understand that beginning orthodontic treatment raises many questions and introduces new experiences. Our dedicated team is committed to supporting you throughout your entire orthodontic journey.
Your Braces are On, What’s Next?
Once your braces are in place, you’ll typically return for a follow-up appointment in six to eight weeks. Subsequent monthly visits will involve routine checks, with Dr. Weber carefully tightening and adjusting your braces to progressively achieve your desired smile.
Adjusting to braces can be a challenge, especially in the early days. It’s common to feel a mix of discomfort and frustration as you adapt to your new orthodontic routine. To ease into your first week with braces, we have compiled three essential tips.
Tip #1 – Understand that Some Discomfort is Expected
While fitting braces is a pain-free process, it’s normal to experience some discomfort and soreness afterwards. The inside of your mouth may feel irritated by the brackets, leading to temporary sores. Until your mouth adjusts, we recommend using orthodontic wax to ease discomfort. To use the wax, soften it between your fingers and apply it to any irritating wires or brackets.
For sores caused by your braces, a saltwater rinse can be soothing. Mix one teaspoon of table salt with a cup of warm water and rinse thoroughly. This will aid in pain relief and promote healing.
If needed, over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol or Advil can help alleviate soreness as your teeth begin moving.
Tip #2 – Pay Attention to Your Diet
Being cautious about what you eat, especially in the initial stages, can reduce discomfort and help your mouth adjust quicker. Opt for soft foods such as mashed potatoes, applesauce, pasta, smoothies, and tender vegetables during the first few days. Cold beverages and frozen treats can also soothe soreness. As you grow accustomed to your braces, you can return to your regular diet, but we advise avoiding sticky, hard, or chewy foods that could damage your braces.
Tip #3 – Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene
Proper care of your braces is crucial for maintaining dental health throughout your treatment. Establishing a good oral hygiene routine in the first week is essential. Brushing after every meal, or at least twice a day, helps prevent plaque buildup. Braces can trap food particles, so adjusting your brushing and flossing techniques is necessary. Remember to replace your toothbrush more frequently as the metal brackets and wires can cause faster wear.
Most patients fully adapt to their braces within a month, despite initial discomfort. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Weber Orthodontics. We’re here to assist you through your treatment.
