Surviving the Holidays with Braces: Tips from Weber Orthodontics

The holiday season is filled with festive meals, sweet treats, and social gatherings. If you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment, getting through the holiday festivities carefully is important to keep your brace and your treatment on track. At Weber Orthodontics, we’re here to help you enjoy every moment of the holidays without compromising your smile journey.

Holiday Eating: What to Eat and What to Avoid

The holidays often mean indulgence, but some foods can be harmful especially if you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment.

When choosing what to eat, choose soft foods, such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, and delicious tender meats. Try orthodontic-friendly desserts like soft cookies or puddings when it comes to sweets. It’s important to avoid hard snacks and sticky treats, so you don’t cause damage to your braces. Avoid sticky foods like chewy candies, nuts, and especially popcorn.

Traveling Tips: What Should You Take

Whether you’re staying local or going on a holiday trip, you must take the necessary precautions to protect your teeth during orthodontic treatment. If you’re going away for the holidays, taking an oral care kit with you would be strongly advised. You can include toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and orthodontic wax. Ask Dr. Weber if there’s anything else he suggests you carry. Also, be sure that you’re keeping your teeth as clean as possible after each snack or meal you’re eating. If you can’t brush right away at least be sure to rinse with water.

Holiday Check-Up: Schedule an appointment before or after the holidays.

If you’re going away for the holidays and in the middle of orthodontic treatment, you can schedule an appointment before your trip to ensure that your braces are intact and you take the right oral care products to keep teeth healthy. If you’re staying local and you know that you’ll be attending holiday parties, it might be a good idea to get your teeth checked to be sure everything looks good and you’ve not caused any damage to your braces.
